How I work

About

Robert Taylor Jr.

How I approach therapy

My approach is grounded in mindfulness and compassion, with an emphasis on helping you stay present and engaged with your life, especially when things feel uncertain, painful, or complicated. In our work together, we’ll slow down enough to notice what is happening beneath the surface and experiment with different ways of responding. I also believe there can be playfulness in therapy. Sometimes imagery, metaphor, or just a little curiosity can help us approach experiences that feel too tender or difficult to touch.

Who I work best with

I tend to do my strongest work with people who are curious about themselves and open to honest self-reflection. You might be at a point where you sense that something in your life is out of alignment, or where you notice a gap between what you think or intend and how you actually move through the world. I enjoy working with people who want to explore that gap with curiosity rather than judgment and who are willing to experiment with new ways of understanding themselves and taking action.

What a first session might look like

A first session with me is exploratory. Rather than immediately trying to solve a problem, we’ll spend time getting a sense of what your life looks like, what you’re carrying, and the circumstances you’re navigating. I’ll be curious about what brought you to therapy and what you’re hoping might change. Together, we’ll begin looking beneath the things you want for your life to explore the needs underneath them. My goal is for the first session to feel like the beginning of a shared inquiry, not an assessment you have to pass.

What drew me to this work

I came to therapy through my work as a meditation guide and sound healer. Those experiences showed me how powerful contemplative practices can be, but they also left me wanting to understand how I could support people in a deeper, safe way. I wanted to develop the clinical skills to sit with people through experiences that cannot always be resolved through a practice or a moment of calm. Therapy has given me a way to bring my interest in mindfulness and human connection into deeper, more sustained work.

What clients tell me they appreciate

Folks often appreciate the way I use imagery and metaphor to help them make sense of complex experiences. They also appreciate the questions I ask, particularly when those questions help them notice something they had not considered before. I work to create a space where people can be honest without feeling judged or pressured to have everything figured out. I think there is value in being able to sit back, get curious about what is happening, and find language for experiences that can sometimes be difficult to name.
